Outreach programme:
Funded by the Capital Community Foundation and Grassroots Grants, the Viewfinder has launched its outreach programme. This aims to make photography as accessible as possible, to a wide audience.
Workshops have included working with:
- a group with special needs
in collaboration with Greenwich Community College - students with moderate learning difficulties
in collaboration with Pendragon School - patients with brain injuries
in collaboration with the Art Group at the Neurological Unit, Homerton Hospital - Trinity Hospice in Clapham
in February 2010 and July 2010
"The Viewfinder Photography Gallery visited Homerton Hospital's brain injuries unit and gave a unique and thoughtful presentation of images to long stay patients, many of whom were deeply interested. We created a special tea party, and patients were able to discuss their favourite photographs and swap images over cake. It was tremendous fun and highly educational. Offering such a rare workshop to a group of adults with head injuries was a very powerful and memorable experience"
Shaun Caton, Art Curator, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London
"The benefits derived by the participants on outreach workshops are widespread and extend beyond simply creating an image, reaching the community as a whole. Having seen first hand the reaction of children who have participated in a workshop, I can only say supporting this programme is immensely rewarding - I am delighted to be able to continue helping."
Grant Mackie, Viewfinder's patron: supporting outreach workshops
Outreach workshops are offered free of charge to community groups and those working with disadvantaged people. To discuss arranging a visit or workshop, or for more information, please contact louise@viewfinder.org.uk.
School workshops
"The thoroughness and professionalism with which our workshop was planned was impressive. My A Level students discussed and analysed the work on show - they were invited to consider ideas surrounding curatorship, potential juxtapositions and relationships between different images. They responded photographically to the exhibited work, and their photographs were published on the Viewfinder's website. It was a hugely successful collaboration that supported the students' coursework unit, reconfirmed the importance of learning outside of the classroom context, as well as highlighting the significant benefits of collaborating with industry professionals. This should happen more often!"
Melany Darke, teacher at Charter School
Workshop awards:
We have been awarded the Quality Learning Outside the Classroom badge in recognition of the emphasis placed on learning through workshops, and the evaluation process we have in place.
