Previous workshop:
Open Salon 2009

18 January 2008

Following an initial discussion of the current exhibition, Open Salon 2009, with the curator (Louise Forrester), workshop participants selected a photograph which particularly interested them.

We discussed the themes and ideas in each photograph. Workshop participants then went out for an hour, taken their own photographs bearing the themes of their favourite images in mind:

connecting unrelated objects (thinking of the hanging of this exhibition, in drawing out resonances between photographs which don't necessarily relate)

combining the wild and unruly (Sarah Garrod's photograph of a girl in a wood) with the geometric and symmetrical (Tony Othen's photograph of shuttered windows in France)

framing within a photograph (Finbar O Suilleabhain's photograph of a street laden with signs and boards)

storytelling within photographs (Darren Coffield's photograph of a performance alluding to 9/11)

signage which reveals little (Finbar O Suilleabhain's photograph, in which road markings and a sign shop lead to an empty billboard)

Anita Chandra's photograph of a peaceful bench.

We reconvened in the gallery for a friendly discussion of the photographs taken, a selection of which are displayed below:
