Britt Hatzius-
One-Thing tale
7th July - 12 August 2006
A collection of photographs by Britt Hatzius taken over a period of one month in and around Greenwich.
Road-dust on plastic spoon - pink petal on abandoned croissant - the thick imprint of tire on a double-yellow line - the dark patch around an abandoned cake left by heavy rainfall on the pavement.
Britt Hatzius' photographic approach is that of collector and note-taker; a form of capturing that portrays a familiar urban environment as an endless pool of precious encounters that could easily be missed. Paving stones, tarmac surfaces, drains, the streets which make up our cities: these surfaces usually thought of as dirty, unforgiving and surrounded by noise and bustle are transformed momentarily into places of stillness where questions can be asked. It is in the questioning, the imagining of a discarded object's history and the contemplation of the time it takes for these transient things to appear and disappear in everyday life - their life within ours - where we find access to a lyricism as eccentric as it is tender.
