Erin J. Juhl -
DEFINING BOUNDARIES
28th November - 18th December 2005
We live in a world of boundaries where strict demarcations separate the public from the private, what is mine from what is yours. Sometimes boundaries work in our favour, giving us a sense of ownership in a world that we cannot otherwise control. Boundaries offer us a chance to create our own microcosms that are respites from the outside world. What happens when these boundaries are blurred? Defining Boundaries explores the nature of the boundary by blurring imagery from public and private worlds.
Photographing her neighbourhood with a manual 35mm camera, Erin J. Juhl creates visually complex double scenes. Rather than focus on the extraordinary aspects of her neighborhood, Juhl seeks out the mundane, the forgotten, and the functional. Projecting slides of these very public images into the private space of her garden, Juhl endeavors to represent a space emerging from aesthetics rather than function. She uses the medium of photography because of its connotative value as a medium that captures truth. The viewer is asked to question boundaries as purely physical constructs, and explore the visual juxtapositions of their own personal worlds.
Having just completed an MA in Interior and Spatial Design, Juhl explores the use of the 300 sq ft gallery space in a way that is reflective of the ideas behind her work.
