Sally Waterman

still-moving

5th December - 19th December 2007

Private View 8th December 4pm-7pm

‘Still-Moving’ is comprised of two photographic ‘still movies’ inspired by two literary texts; ‘The Turn of the Screw’ by Henry James and T.S Eliot’s poem ‘The Waste Land’. Marking Waterman’s transition from photography to moving image, and her consequent interest in the interaction between these two mediums, the complimentary films deal with her preoccupation with the personal interpretation of literature into visual narratives. Both works explore the artist’s concerns with identity, in particular, the notion of a split self: the visible, socially acceptable façade and the secret self within.

The unsettling silence of both works emphasizes the inherent qualities of ghostliness and invisibility that emerge from Waterman’s elusive self-portraits. The governess in ‘The Turn of the Screw’ (2001) attempts to understand what is real and what is imagined and the figure within ‘In the Cage’ (2007), based on the non-communicative relationship in section II of Eliot’s poem, ‘A Game of Chess’, seeks solace by merging into her surroundings, after acting out a series of carefully constructed manoeuvres.

SALLY WATERMAN born Isle of Wight, UK, 1974. Lives in London. Gained her joint BA (Hons) English with Design Arts at University of Plymouth in 1995 and an MA Image & Communication (Photography) at Goldsmiths College in 1996. Waterman is currently working on an interpretation of T.S Eliot’s poem The Waste Land for a PhD by practice at University of Plymouth. She is a part time lecturer in Film Arts at Plymouth College of Art and Design. Waterman’s photographic and video installations have been exhibited extensively, including ‘Shifting Horizons’, Derby Museum & Art Gallery and Midland Arts Centre, (2000-2001) and ‘Forest’, Nottingham Castle Museum, Oriel Davies Gallery, Wolverhampton Gallery and York Art Gallery (2004-2005). Her Journey Home installation will be exhibited in the ‘Sequences’ exhibition at PM Gallery, Ealing in February 2008 and work in progress from The Waste Land will be shown at the Viewpoint Gallery, Plymouth College of Art in April 2008.
